The Kosovo issue is possible only through a direct Belgrade and Pristina agreement, but I am not optimistic about it, former US Ambassador to Serbia William Montgomery has told the Serbian news agency.
According to him, the first obstacle is the fact that Kosovo Albanians have much support from Americans who take the stand for Kosovo's independence at the current borders.
As long as the US has that stance, it is small that any Albanian politician, would take over this risk and hand over any territory.
It lists four possible scenarios for Kosovo.
The first is the continuation of the current situation, which would eventually be used for Serbia's EU deadlock.
The second is normalising relations without direct recognition of Kosovo from Serbia.
The third is that, before Serbia, at the end of the EU membership process, the solution is put in line with principle “Receive or permission “ “and enter Kosovo's independence and enter the EU, refuse and will not become a member”.
The fourth could be for the Serbian and Albanian leadership to reach a bilateral agreement, in which there will be elements that will not please the international community. Reference to this latest scenario, Montgomery sees a partition of Kosovo and receiving a territory of Serbia from Kosovo that is mainly inhabited by Albanians (closs of territories).
“expects the EU to ask Serbia to influence Russia to unblock Kosovo's accession to the United Nations Organisation in exchange for Serbia's EU accession”, Montgomery said.
