The second war in the African Congo included nine states that fought in Congolese territory in the bloodiest conflict since World War II.

By 2008, 5.4 million people were killed the same year the UN officially declared them weapons of war, especially as it did during the conflict.

Two decades after the war, sexual violence is still a national rate. The Democratic Republic of Congo, in particular the eastern part of the country, carries the postscriptual title of the world's centre when it comes to rape, broadcasts Kosova Prees.

Women who survived the war, which officially lasted until 2003, have since lived in utter poverty, and now they talk about what war did to their lives 20 years after the beginning.

Claudius from Rwanda, a state bordering Congo, was only 13 years old during the 1994 genocide, when her father was killed. After the genocide, her sister died after becoming ill, while she was forced to marry as 16-year-old. Her husband was about sixty years old and was repeatedly raped, writes Independent.

My father was killed during the genocide, because he hid Tuts. Mother and I survived after we were hidden in the garden, “she said.

Claudius admits that they did not know that her husband was infected with HIV, since no one had told them about it.

She was shocked to realize that he had been infected with this dangerous disease.

I went home and asked him why you lied to me and hid it from me. I just wanted to hide and never talk to anyone again, she relates.

Meanwhile, his husband died of his illness, Klaudine is now an activist in society, who is openly talking about the horror of HIV. She goes to school and gives a lecture to young girls about the dangers of her illness.

Sometimes our children would be abused in school if their parents were HIV positive. The children did not want to sit with them, they would go home with tears”, she relates.

But it is not just Claudius who suffered the horrors of life as a result of the war. Lucie, also survived the war, was separated from the man who beat him mercilessly and finally abandoned him because of other women.

She relates that they had a common bust, but after the divorce her husband told her that she is not right about anything, since his new wife already had that right.

Her cousins show how Lucia, now 39-year-old, was beaten like animals. When she went to the police to relate the case, she was asked for evidence as a telephone shoot, which she did not have, and her husband escaped without arrest.

Danielle Spencer, a counter-violent adviser at Action Aid UK, says many women and girls in Rwanda and Congo have been exposed to categories of violence that are completely undiagnosed.

The “Violence against women and girls has started before genocide and subsequent wars, and the UN now propagans that these are early signs of a future war. We also know that at the time of the conflict women and girls experience multiple violence from known members, but also unknown family members or soldiers “, Spencer says.

According to her, the root of all of this is gender inequality and the order that we do not face the root problems that occur during the war, women will not be safe even in peace.
