The French newspaper writes that “0 years after the declaration of independence, negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo are on the dead end” and that Serbia's President Alexander Vuciq has indicated that Kosovo and Serbia are “kilometers away from any” agreement.
But, Kosovo President Hashim Thaci, according to French media, wants to build lasting peace with the resulting enemy.
In his interview with the newspaper, he says that tragic narrators are the obstacle.
In Serbia, public opinion continues to believe that Kosovo is the cradle of Serbia. So we need time to explain to the citizens of our countries that it is in our common interest to build stable relations”.
The common “interest is for Kosovo to be recognised by Serbia, negotiations on EU membership, UN membership. The Balkan region needs stability”, President Thaci has said, and added that “to achieve this we need EU support and, of course, President Macro's, because France has always been in the forefront of efforts to protect peace”.
Speaking to Kosovo, President Thaci has said that “Kosovo is Europe's newest democracy, with many enemies trying to weaken Kosovo by presenting it as a corrupt state. But we are stable democracy, with law enforcement and liberal laws. The economy is in good shape. The European Union is our only hope: we want to be part of this family. Kosovo citizens are over 95 percent in favour of the EU and NATO, and we are working to empower our state institutions”.
While, for the identity of Kosovo, President Thaci has said that the European Union is not a club of Christian nations. Identity is the product of history. But even though the population is predominantly Muslim, we are not Islamic states. The cathedral in Pristina is the largest in the region. I have Muslims in my family, but I also have Christians. Let us not allow prejudice and populism to poison reality. For 20 years we have fought jihadists. During the war, we have been very careful not to let religiously motivated foreign fighters join our ranks in the war against Serbia. We have refused to tarnish our legitimate war. Today's War Against DAESH and Al-Qaeda”
For the likelihood of a deal with Serbia “status quo is problematic and prevents us from moving forward. We have to work for the future. France and Germany have achieved this”.
“We cannot change the past: Serbia and Kosovo have been at war. But we can change the future by building peace between us”, President Thaci has finished.
