The queen had decided that no one would go to bed before her.
Diana is said to have found it so difficult to stay until she was moved to justify herself before the Queen, violating royal rule.
Speaking in a previous interview, Sir William Hesseltine, one of the queen's former private secretaries, described how Diana found the hard rule to pursue.
He said that for Diane the long royal evenings were agony.
“Diana was prone to such extremes, so she also reasoned and went to bed, which was thought to be bad behavior before Queen”, he said.
Sir William served as the queen's private secretary from 1986 to 1990.
Diane joined the Royal Family when she married the queen's eldest son, Prince Charles, in July 1981, a few months after the couple announced their relationship.
Charles and Diana split up in 1992, where the princess revealed details about the end of their relationship.
