Speaking at a rally in Belgrade on Thursday, a representative of NATO has declared that the alliance is not against forming the Kosovo Army.
Robert Pszzel, senior official for Russia and the Western Balkans from the NATO Department of Public Diplomacy, said this should be done in line with the Kosovo Constitution.
According to him, transforming the Kosovo Security Force is the right of Kosovo authorities “, but that any development should be made in line with the Constitution and in consultation with the international community”.
“If we're going to take it right away from them, then we know what the situation is and what that means”, said Pszczel.
When it comes to KFOR's presence in Kosovo, according to Pszczel, there are no plans to reduce or change anything, while their presence depends on the security situation. Path NATO is to continue searching for an acceptable solution for all parties, he added.
Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia Branimir Filipovic said Serbia's position is that transforming the Kosovo Security Force into the military is taking place against UN Security Council Resolution 1244.
There can't be two armies in one field, NATO has the view that transformation is possible through the constitutional framework, and we have in common that we oppose unilateral movements. Just such movements from Pristina represent the problems that are the biggest in this area”, he stressed.
