The cheaters told “BBC” in Russian languages that they possessed details of a total of 120 million accounts that were trying to sell, although there is reason to suspect in this figure given by them.

Facebook officials said no compromise has been made with Facebook security and that data has probably been obtained through harmful internet browser links.

Facebook officials added that measures have been taken to prevent damage to other user accounts.

The BBC has found that many of the users whose data has been misused are from Ukraine and Russia. However, some are also from Great Britain, the United States, Brazil, and other countries.

“We have contacted the builders of the web browsers to ensure that links known as harmful are not more accessible to download anything into their stores”, said one of the top Facebook leaders, Guy Rosen.

“We have also contacted legal organs and co-operated with local authorities to block the website, which showed data from Facebook accounts”, he added.
