The mission of sending a robot to Mars to search for signs of alien life has already begun to implement, deciding where it will be launched when it reaches the faraway planet. That decision has preceded a discussion that has lasted several years. The arrival of the robot on Mars is expected to take place in 2021. This robot will dig into Mars ' surface to look for signs of life, which may be covered by a thin layer of material.
The team of this project, which is a co-operation between Europe and Russia, has decided that the robot will be deployed to a point called “Oxia Planum”, which is thought to have been the site of a large quantity of water billions of years ago. Experts have been puzzled to select this location or another location, called “Mawth Vallis”, which also had some signs of water existence in the past.
A member of the team of scientists, prof. John Dridges, said this country has been selected after four years of careful discussion. The main reason for selecting this location is the suitable area for performing robot drilling. “With an attractive area, sedies can contain organic materials from long-term different environments, including environments where life could exist”, he said.
The purpose of this mission is to dig up Mars' surface at a depth of two feet [2 m] and the search for possible traces of life, believed to have existed four billion years ago when the planet had water. As you know, water is a vital element of life, while the place called “Oxia Planum” lies in an area where many dry channels are observed. Otherwise, layers of clay - rich minerals are another sign that supports suspicion of the existence of a large lake many years ago, writes “Independent”
