United States President Donald Trump said he would withdraw from the deal with Russia for gun control dating back to the Cold War.
He reiterated that Moscow has violated the agreement in a speech to the Security Council.
“ “Russia has violated the deal for many years”, he added.
“We need to develop those weapons, only if Russia and China come to us and tell us, let's really be smart and none of us develop weapons”, Trump said.
The 1987 Treaty prohibits the United States and Russia, the possession, production, and transport of missile weapons. The US had accused Russia of violating the deal in 2014.
Russia had rejected US accusations, stressing that some elements of the weapons system have been in conflict with the deal.
Trump's statements come days after Putin said Russia could use nuclear weapons in response to any nuclear attacks in the country.
