Vasfije Krasniqi-Godman last night has spoken publicly about one of the most sensitive topics in Kosovo.
She has become the first woman, the victim of sexual violence during the war, to have confessed the horror experienced when she was raped by Serb police forces in 1999.
To the 36-year-old confession, many public faces and Kosovo politicians have reacted. Finally, PSD leader Shpend Ahmeti and Vice Chairman Visar Ymer have sought justice for crimes committed during the war.
Krasniqi-Goodman now lives in Texas in the United States, but at the time he was raped he had 16 years.
“Vasfije Krasniqi Goodman last night became Kosovo's courage. Raped by Serbian forces at the age of 16, Vasfia spoke publicly on public television about these unsaid war crimes. He fought crime, fought prejudice, and fought for the truth. So far, rape stories were numbers, and last night they became real and once again reminded us of the pain of war and crime. But more importantly, it's all about telling you and working to ensure that every criminal's justice is restored for the crimes he's committed. The Kosovo side in the dialogue should present this request as primary and non-negotiable in any option”, said part of Ahmeti's response.
Ymer has praised Krasniqi-Goodman's confession as shocking.
The systematic sexual violence exerted against Albanians in Kosovo during the war has been orchestrated and organised by the Serbian state under the Milosevic regime (he called Leader with good ideas). This has been intended to directly hit the social stock in Kosovo. The refusal to discuss this violence does nothing but fulfills some of that purpose. This long - term refusal to discuss this crime has left victims of sexual violence in the eternal agony of pain and suffering as a result of this crime. We should not be ashamed of the crimes Serbia has committed to us. For them we must insist on justice”, Umer wrote.
20 thousand is the estimated number of women raped during the Kosovo war.
