From a cemetery of old fighter planes it will turn into a logistical base for the Alliance. In 2005, Albania removed 224 Soviet and Chinese MiG aircraft from the fleet, and since 2009, air space has been monitored by allies in NATO, Greece and Italy.
Kucova's “Basa is NATO's first track in the Western Balkans”, Albanian Defence Minister Olita Gacka told Reuters. NATO will spend more than 50 million euros in the first phase to transform Kuchova into a support base for supply, transport, training and exercise, writes “Respulica”.

The region's media have also published photos showing that older Chinese and Russian planes are currently “housed” at the foot of a mountain bordering the base. The air base is 64km south of Tirana.
Greek media write that after Kosovo with Bondsteel's base, Albania is also returning to a NATO fortress in the Western Balkans. Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama offers land and water to the US for thousands of soldiers and weapons systems”, writes the Pentapostag.gr.
According to her, the goal of Albania and NATO is to block Russia's efforts to infiltrate the region and strengthen its influence through secret services, investments and propaganda through the media.
