Sali Berisha celebrates 74's birthday today. It continues to be active in political life in Albania and remains among the most charismatic leaders in the Balkans, writes Periscopi.
He was born on October 15, 1944. He is a cardiologist who served as Albania's second president from 1992 to 1997 and prime minister from 2005 to 2013.
During the time of communism, he was secretary of the Labour Party committee at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Tirana.
Berisha was born in Vicidol in Tropoja, northern Albania near the border with Kosovo. His father was Ram Berisha and his mother's name was Sugar.
He is married to Freedom Berisha, pediatrics. She is president of the Albanian Children's Foundation. Her foundation focuses on children with autism and syndrome down. Sali Berisha has declared that he is proud to be Muslim, and has been described as such by Western sources. He restored Islam to the Albanian political scene, attending a course of re-Islamicisation in the country after decades of anti-religious policies under Communism. /Periscopi
