The legendary jazz trumpeter Hugh Masekela, a key figure in the struggle to end apartheid and “South African jazz father”, has died at the age of 78.
In a statement, his family said he had passed away in Johannesburg “following a prolonged and bold battle with prostate cancer”.
Masekela gained global recognition with its unique Afro-Jazz sound and hits like “Soweto Blues”, broadcast the Klan Kosova.
The 1977 song became synonymous with the anti-party movement.
In a statement, the president of South Africa, Jacob Zuma said Masekela's death was “a great loss for the music industry and for the country in general”.
