UN Secretary General Matthew's Personal Envoy Nimetz, reportedly has proposed to the two countries' delegations during talks under way in New York, five alternatives to the name.
According to Macedonian media, quoted yesterday by Greek, the proposed names are all preceded by the term “Republic of”.
They are New Macedonia, Northern Macedonia, Upper Macedonia, Macedonia and Vardar and Macedonia and Skopje.
Even though Nimetz has said the process is going in the right direction, Macedonia's negotiator, Vasko Naumovski, has named the proposals submitted by the UN mediator as alternative “out of a dignified” solution.
Athens does not want its neighbour to have the name Macedonia because of the existence of a region in Greece of the same name.
