In an amazing approach, officials from South Korea and North Korea held a series of meetings Tuesday, where they reached an agreement for North Korea to participate in the Winter Olympics next month in Pyongchang.
The deal comes after several tense months, as North Korea has conducted a series of tests showing visible progress towards its ability to attack the United States with nuclear weapons, reports “Al Jazeera”, Periscope broadcast.
As a gesture intended to reduce tensions during the Olympics, South Korea and the US agreed to put off some training until after the games.
“The United States and South Korea have only pushed to cancel annual spring exercises so that the Olympics and the Paralympiades can pass smoothly,” said Yoel Sanno, Chief of Global Policy and Security Risk for BMI Research.
There are analysts who argue that the negotiations with North Korea are limited to what they can achieve, as co-operation with foreign powers is contrary to the country's ideology and that genus will not leave its goal of becoming the armed ruler of the Korean Peninsula.
North Korean expert Brian Myers wrote in a recent book: “We cannot reason with a dictator whose legitimacy stems from a compound of unbearable hostility”. /Periscopi/
