Italian Social Democrat Michele Nicoletti was elected today the new president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (APCE).
The only candidate for the post, Nikolletti, was elected at the end of a vote at the opening of the Assembly session. His mandate is one year old and renewable only once.
The president of the Socialists' elected (SOC) in PACE, Nicoletti, 61, led the Italian delegation since 2014.
He succeeded the Spaniard, Pedro Agramut, forced to resign in early October, following a meeting rejected with Syrian President Bachar al-Assad in March 2017.
The assembly had been conducted since October by conservative Cypriot MP Stella Kyriakides (PPE), who temporarily held the post.
Michelle Nicoletti becomes 31st president PACE since the establishment of the Council of Europe in 1949 and the second Italian in the post.
The PACE numbers 318 parliamentarians issued by the national parliaments of 47 Council of Europe member states.
