The European Commission (KE) today announced it will invest 1 billion euros in the development of highly performable computers by 2020, in an effort to compete with the United States and China.
“Kina is running, the U.S. is running, we're running. We need to run a little faster”, EU Research Commissioner Carlos Modas said at a press conference, Telegrafis conveys.
A total of 1 billion euros is the EC's target, 486m euros will come from the European Union, and the rest will be used for the purchase of two soups during 2019 or 2020, which researchers and companies can use to process large amounts of data.
Germany, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia and Switzerland are the countries that will participate in the project.
“Supercomputers are now at the center of significant progress and innovations in many areas, which directly affect the daily lives of European citizens and can help save energy and fight climate change, more efficiently”, said Mariya Gabriel, EU Commissioner for Technology.
