With the start of the year, Bulgaria has taken over the European Union presidency leadership, becoming the first country from the Balkans to assume such a position for the next six months.
Before Bulgaria, it was Estonia that had held the post, which is spent every six months rotating from country to country.
Bulgaria has become part of the EU in 2007, while is now expected to boost the prospect for neighbouring Western Balkan countries towards EU membership.
When talking about a united Europe, we should not forget that the Western Balkans need a clear perspective and link between them and member states”, Bulgaria has said on their EU presidential page.
The Bulgarian presidency will lead at the time when the European Union is deciding what relations with Great Britain will be after it leaves the bloc in March 2019.
Bulgaria has faced criticism from the EU, as member states have cited the lack of an economic balance and other social issues, noting even high levels of corruption.
