Hollywood star Angelina Jolie said today that the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) lacks the funding required to meet the basic needs of Syrian refugees.
During a visit to the Zaatar camp in Jordan, Jolie said UNHCR's response to the Syria crisis is only 7% financed this year. In 2017, it was only 50% financed.
“U n NHCR does not have the funds to provide fully even the most basic necessities for survival for many households”, Jolie said.
After seven years of war, most Syrian refugees have spent all their savings. The vast majority of them already live below the poverty line, less than three dollars a day”, she added.
Jolie also called on the UN Security Council and the international community to find a solution to the crisis, prompting peace “not to be built on impunity for the purpose of civilians on all sides, school and hospital bombings,
Chemical weapons and rapes used as war weapons “.
Surrounded by dozens of children and teenagers living in the camp, Jolie told them: “I'm very proud of all of you, you're very strong”
The Zaatar Refugees Camp opened in 2012, a year after antigovernmental protests turned into violence in Syria. It is the largest refugee camp in Jordan to house nearly 80,000 Syrian refugees.
