The latest update of the Google Photos app brings improvements to performance. This, however, adds a special feature to the photos now will hide the videos you see so that you can reproduce them later without using the traffic of your database.
Since these videos have to be stored somewhere, they'll use the storage of your phone, but the storage is cheap and the data traffic isn't. Also, cleaning up your cacache is not very hard work, if you need to release space.
