European Union counts tasks to be done by the new Kosovo government

The EU Office in Kosovo and EULEX through a statement to the media have stated that forming institutions in Kosovo is a very important step, but the newly formed government should start working immediately to strengthen institutions and implement necessary reforms, especially in rule of law, fight corruption and [...]
The joint statement says Kosovo faces difficult challenges, including corruption and poor rule of law, high unemployment and poor performance in the education system.
“These are serious obstacles to developing the economy, attracting stable investments and creating employment opportunities. The EU wants Kosovo to succeed, and called on politicians to focus on these daily issues of importance to people. The EU urges the newly formed government to start immediately working on strengthening institutions and implementing needed reforms, particularly in the rule of law, the fight against corruption and the improvement of the economy, in line with the Stabilisation and Association Agreement, the European Reforms Agenda, and other relevant agreements between the EU and Kosovo”, the joint statement said.
It is also stressed that it is very important that political leaders take these challenges seriously and act effectively in the best interest of the people of Kosovo.
The “those in power have the primary responsibility for strengthening rule of law through a reform of the judicial system in line with the best European standards. It is essential that Kosovo work on the remaining criteria for visa liberalisation by moving ahead in the border demarcation agreement with Montenegro and by taking action against corruption and organised crime. The EU expects the new government to play an active and constructive role in the region and work together with Belgrade to ensure that a step of money has been made in the dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade facilitated by the EU. Agreements reached in this context must be fully implemented. As High Representative Federika Mogerini reiterated last week, Kosovo has European prospects. Kosovo's people want and deserve the same opportunities, protection and rights as all citizens of our countries. It is important that Kosovo continue to move forward on its European path. Kosovo has no time to waste. Kosovo policymakers must show responsible leadership and meet citizens' expectations.”, the report said.
