Democratic Union for Integration leader Ali Ahmeti has not yet made public the name of the Macedonian capital's presidential candidate Skopje. The race for Skopje is praised as the most important battle of local elections in Macedonia.
Political parties have until Monday at midnight to hand over lists of their candidates for mayors. But, DUI chairman Ali Ahmeti has not yet made public the name of the candidate for the city of Skopje.
The chief of the LSDM, Zoran Zaev, and DUI chairman Ali Ahmeti, are in intensive negotiations that should result in support of the DUI candidate in the first round. “Zaev's request has been made with the aim of using the election model in Macedonia and winning a mayor in the first round”, Express reports.
If the agreement is reached, it will be the first time in Macedonia's history that the largest Albanian party has no candidate for mayor, even though more than 20% of Albanians live in Skopje.
Macedonian media report Ahmeti fears a direct confrontation for Skopje with the Besa Movement, reported to be having growth based on polls that have taken place in Macedonia.
Media in Macedonia have reported that the EUSA is considered the favourite for these elections, especially in Skopje, where the Cair municipality is their strongest stronghold.
Meanwhile, based on the latest election results, it is the ZAEV party, which has mostly voters in Skopje.
The results of the recent elections say that in the capital, LSDM received about 129,000 votes, while VMRO received about 10,000 less or 119 thousand. The LSDM has more votes than VMRO in Skopje, even if majority Albanian municipalities, Cairi and Saraji are excluded.
But, at the same time, Besa, DUI, the Alliance for Albanians and DPA in the capital received over 46 thousand votes. This means that the final outcome will depend greatly on the decision by Albanians on who they support in the second circle. Whether they will vote for LSDM or VMRO or not to vote.
