October 1992, Skelan front near Srebrenica: Two soldiers facing each other, weapons ready. Bosniak Daut Tisic is faster and shoots Serbian Dane Vasic.

Years later, the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina has ended. David survived. Some years he lived as an outcast in Sweden. But once he returns and buys a home in Brezo, near Sarajevo. Later, he returns to his village, Skelan, buys some cows, and works as a farmer.

When David was sitting in a village brewery with friends in the fall of 2006, he passed by his desk. He said a greeting and sat on another table. David can't believe his eyes. This is the guy I killed”, David calls. He goes to the table and says: “I killed you!” And the other guy laughs back: “And you see I'm alive?

Daut recalls: “in October 1992 I have saved with my family from Skelan in the mountains to the village of Milevian. We had heard that Serbs had prepared an attack on the villages of Josevo and Jagodnja. With a handful of soldiers, I rushed to help the people of the village. Suddenly, I saw a Serb soldier a few yards from me. He got up slowly and pointed the gun at me. I shot him and hit him in the chest. I remember it fell on my back. I was convinced he was dead. ”

David relates that he had then hurried toward the village. “The war didn't last long. We were able to keep soldiers away and protect the inhabitants. But I didn't see a gun or a Serb soldier in return. I thought his men took him away, that I had seen this was a Serb elite unit. ”

As it turned out, it was about Private Danne Vasic. I'm really glad he lives”, says Daut Tic in conversation with Deutsche Welle. “So I don't carry a burden on my conscience” So it was that in 2006, the two soldiers were officially recognized as “” But with brandy, how it always happens in the Balkans.

We had this action planned because of the ongoing attacks coming from this village”, the Serb recalls. I knew the ground and was sent to see the situation. Must be routine action. At one point I heard a sound and a crackling gun. I turned around and saw a man pointing a gun at me. ”

Serbia claims it had initially not understood which party this man was part of. This moment of indecision was of crucial importance. He was faster, or I would have killed him. I didn't hear the shots. Last thing I saw was his gun moving. I felt a blow that threw me a few feet back. When I woke up, I saw the weapon destroyed and my bulletproof vest saved my life. I was fortunate that I wasn't injured”, Dane Vasic recalls.

After the meeting at the local meeting, Daut and Danne became not only friends but also business partners. They plan joint investments. Dane lives on the other side of the Drin River in Serbia. It buys and sells herbs and berries, has a truck, and owns several souvenir shops.

“Plan to open a joint firm that would connect my and his activities. We've also presented a project, but the decision lasts. ”, says Dautti. Dane claims he's sure they'll make it.

I have the impression, that some politicians do not take a good look at our friendship and co-operation. They'd rather want us to fight and fight each other so that each of us can live in his ghetto. So they stay more in power”, says Bosnian Muslim Daut.

Both started talking to each other openly about what they did during the war. “I don't have to be ashamed”, the Serb says. „I didn't do anything wrong or illegal. I was a soldier like him. I shot him, he shot me. This is the war: You shoot so you don't get shot. I think neither I nor Daut wanted this war. ”

However, no war has brought any good to them.

Daut's true story is presented at the Sarajevo Film Festival on 13 August. The documentary “We) Pryjatelji” has been prepared by Bosnian authors Emir Kathatanovic and Sead Kreševljakovi. The Sarajevo Film Festival is one of the most important in the Western Balkans.
