German police have raided the homes and offices of two people suspected of planning to kill leftist politicians.

The couple, one of whom is a police officer, were not satisfied with the government's policies on refugees and immigrants, the federal prosecutor's office said.

They had drafted a list of the names of politicians who were targeted to eliminate them. Until now, no one has been arrested.

In 2015, Chancellor Angela Merkel opened Germany's borders for hundreds of thousands of immigrants and refugees.

The decision split the country, but Mrs. Merkel said in a recent interview that she did not repent.

Suspected police officer worked in Ludwegslust, north of Germany, about 150 kilometers northwest of Berlin.

Discipline measures have been taken against him, authorities in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern said.

The couple reportedly feared Germany's immigration policies would lead to attacks and undermine the country.

They are being investigated on suspicion of planning “serious violence threatening the state”, the prosecutor's office said. She added that they were beginning to collect food and ammunition.

The raid was also carried out on property belonging to people associated with the two suspects.

Germans go to the polls in late September, and Mrs. Merkel is demanding a fourth term in office.
