Not rarely in Kosovo are journalists threatened and hampered by their work. A recent case of an attack took place Wednesday evening against journalist Parim Oluri, who heads the online newspaper Insander.
Oluri told Radio Free Europe, that strangers attacked him while he was going to his apartment with his fiancée. He feels that the motives of the attack involve just what he does.
" I did not know who they were or who they were. She's making me suspicious and I believe they've been orchestrated and driven by someone”, Oluri said.
Oluri, who deals mainly with research themes, said that he often faces threats, especially through social networks from those who mentioned in corruption-related reports.
I now have multiple threats from Facebook, multiple insults from people who vent their anger when you don't like author writing. I've had threats earlier, and I've called them in the police, about some of the Squirrel City Committee tenders. In the first case, police have done well, the police and the judiciary have not provided any additional information on what has been done with the case. I see problems, Insider will continue to report about corrupt relatives, about the millions that have been made black by policy people and businesses”, Oluri said.
The attack on Insider's journalist has condemned representatives of Kosovo institutions, organisations protecting human rights and the Association of Kosovo Journalists.
Kosovo President Hashim Thaci, in his Facebook account, has written that “the attack on journalist Parim Oluri is unacceptable in the state we have built on the values of democracy, respect for human rights and free expression”.
Worried with news of the attack and violence exercised against Insider journalist Parim Oluri has also expressed outgoing prime minister, Isa Mustafa.
“in a society in which public word right should be cultivated, such acts are low, unacceptable and punishable”, Mustafa wrote on Facebook.
The Kosovo Journalists' Association has called on the order bodies for the quickest lighting of the case, underlining that “such attacks basically undermine freedom of expression and media”.
Order and justice authorities said the case is being handled with priority. Besim Kelmendi, prosecutor at the chief state prosecutor's office, told Radio Free Europe that all cases involving attacks on journalists are handled with priority.
All cases are being handled prioritized, and this last case that happened yesterday with Mr. Parim Oluri is being dealt with priority. We have invited Mr. Oluri to keep in touch with us to support him. So every case that is happening is handled with priority”, Kelmendi said.
The international organisation's latest report, Freedom House, listed Kosovo among countries with partial freedom. The Kosovo Journalists' Association has recorded dozens of cases of attacks and threats on media employees this year.
