World Day Marked Against Human Trafficking

The international migration organisation (IOM) today marks July 30th, the World Day for Combating Human Trafficking, whose goal is to turn attention to the suffering of the large number of human trafficking victims who face sexual explosion, forced labour, captivity, organ trade. World Day is [...]

The World Day was marked in 2013 after the adoption of the UN General Assembly's Resolution for Combating Trade With People, as IOM became involved in the global fight against trafficking of people in the broader context of migration management from 1994, with clear vision of facing this type of crime because almost every country in the world is under the influence of bad practice, whether country of origin, transit, or site of the victims ' destination.

In the last two decades, more than 70,000 people have received support from our teams worldwide.

The activities which have been implemented in co-operation with government institutions, the non-governmental sector and international organisations are based on three principles: respect for human rights, physical, mental and social welfare and human community, and stability through strengthening institutional capacities of government institutions and civil society.

Support is dedicated to preventing human trafficking and protecting victims from trafficking, and at the same time being provided for safe and stable reintegration and (even returning to their countries from where possible)”, say IOM.

Of the surviving victims of human trafficking 74 percent have been trafficked for forced labor, 17 percent for the purpose of sexual explosion. About 13 percent of the total number of people-backed victims are children whose average age is 11 years.

The data also shows that OIM's surviving victims are mostly women, who not only face sexual abuse but also were victims of compulsory marriages, as well as those who face serious economic difficulties.
