Saudi Arabia has donated $66.7m to support U's efforts NICEF and the World Health Organization to fight cholera in Yemen.
Stephen O'Brien, UN Undersecretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, said yesterday it is thought that the number of cholera infected in Yemen has exceeded 200 thousand people this week.
Chiefs of U NICEF and WHO said through a statement yesterday that they are facing the worst cholera epidemic in the world currently, registering an average of 5,000 new cases of infection per day.
Chief U n NICEF, Anthony Lake, said that the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Yemen over the past two years with “6.8 million people on the verge of famine and 1300 deaths from cholera, was an preventable” situation.
The cholera epidemic began at a time when the country has experienced two years of serious conflict in the Saudi-led coalition war against the Huth group, which has killed at least 5,000 civilians.
