Earlier, about 1600 p.m. that evening when temperatures had fallen, police had found the family trying to cross into Croatia in an effort to reach Europe. They were taken to a police station for questioning.
Medina's mother, who was also traveling with her other children, begged local officials to let them leave in the morning because they were tired of walking for hours.
But Croatian authorities rejected this requirement, reports “Alzeera”, the Periscopi broadcast.
Croatian police sent them to Serbia from the town of Tovarnik and told the family to walk along the train line again in Sid. Medina was killed on that trip.
The child's 15-year-old brother found her body from where it was hit.
My mother was afraid that my younger brothers and sisters would not be able to see where they were going in the night”, Nilab Hussein told “Al Jazeera”, the 17-year-old sister of Medina.
They wanted to hide my sister's death, says Niab Hussein referring to the police who deported her family.
Croatia's interior ministry confirmed the death on its website, denying that border police were responsible. The government has said the family returned to Serbia voluntarily.
According to Doctors Without Borders (MSF), seven people, including three children, died on the train line between Tovarnik and Sid, at the Croatia-Serbia border in 2017.
After they were hit by Medina, the family was forced to wait in a forest for about an hour. From there, Serbian police officers took them to Belgrade.
My mother asked the Serbian police, which hospital Medina is in, but they told us they did not know”, Nilab said.
Croatian police have previously been accused of using violence to force migrants and refugees back to Serbia.
According to the UN, there are currently about 7,000 refugees in Serbia about half are children./Periscopi/
