China has closed 13 thousand websites in the last three years

China has closed more than 13,000 websites in the last three years for violations of domestic laws, and most people backed “the government's” efforts to clean up online activity wrote Chinese state news agency Xinhua.

The government has applied strict controls since Xi Jinping came to power five years ago.

Critics say it is done to limit freedom of expression and prevent criticism of the ruling Communist party.

But the Chinese government says every country in the world regulates the internet and its measures are in defense of national security and social stability, preventing the spread of pornography and violent content.

Full of 13 thousand websites have been closed and 10 million accounts have been affected. The government did not elaborate on accounts but is believed to belong to social networks.

Over 90% respondents have supported government efforts to manage the internet, while 63.% of them believe in recent years there has been a significant reduction of violent online content.

China is one of the countries with the worst censorship online by preventing access to several world media, social networking search engines involving Google and Facebook.
