Two recent incidents have reinforced the administration's position against the current US immigration system based on family ties, a system President Trump considers a threat to national security.
Tyler Horton, incumbent press secretary of the National Security Department, said yesterday that his agency “confirms that the suspect in the terrorist attack on Harrisburg in Pennsylvania, as well as another suspect arrested for money laundering deliberately for terrorism, had benefited from migration through their relatives”.
Mr. Horton said that both incidents “highlight the Trump administration's concern for chain immigration through extensive family ties”.
Yesterday, an armed man in Harrisburg who came as an immigrant from Egypt shot police officers and patrols at several locations before he was killed.
Ahmed Amminmin El-Mofty shot a patrol officer, but officials say her health situation is expected to improve.
A relative of the suspect said the family is stunned by his actions. Ahmed Soweillam told the media that his sister was married to El-Mofty suspect, but that they broke up six years ago. He said his former condition had worked for some time as a security guard and that he had later gone to Egypt to return to the US just a few months ago. “He's not a perfect man, but he's not aggressive”, said Mr. Soweilam.
National Security Department spokesman Tyler Horton informed that a long chain of immigration “had enabled “the admission of suspects to the United States through the request of a distant relative made years ago”.
During another incident, a Pakistani woman who entered the US through the family-based immigration system has been charged with money laundering through the virtual Bitcoin currency, as well as for transfers of money to the jihadists of Islamic State. The defendant's lawyer, Zoolia Shahnaz, said his client was trying to help Syrian refugees.
Mr. Horton said migration through relatives “has been used by terrorists to attack our country” and that the immigration system based on the family “makes it difficult to stop entering dangerous persons in the United States and protecting the safety of each American”. He added that a immigration system based on “credits is used by almost all other countries”.
Supporters of an immigration system based on merits say the current system lowers wage levels and the chip region assimilation.
They say a credit-based system would lower the immigration level and enable immigrants who come to the US to have high skills and not need support from public funds.
President Trump was expressed earlier than “for decades, the United States has had a low-skilled immigrant system, providing a record number of green cards to low-paid immigrants. This immigration system has exerted considerable pressure on American workers, taxpayers and community resources”.
But critics say that the American economy also needs low-skilled workers and that a credit - based system would harm industries supported by these workers.
A credit-based system would also cost more to the government, as applications would be reviewed and funds paid for restoring incomes, costs currently faced by their families.
Critics also see a system based on merit as non-Americans.
The Democrat Leader in the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, said that a system based on merits “would abandon essential respect for the family, the essence of what we believe and what we represent as Americans”. /Zeri Americas
