US President Donald Trump and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin will not hold a formal meeting at the summit for the economic co-operation of Asia-Peacekeeping in Vietnam.
Citing the busy agenda on both sides, White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders added that they could have informal interactions between them. The spokeswoman's statement contradicts what the Russian side told reporters the previous day. Any possible meeting, formal or not between Trump and Putin would be held in the background of investigations into Russia's intervention in the 2016 presidential election, threatening to eclipse the long journey of the American leader to Asia.
At the APEC summit, Washington's number one is stressing ahead of business leaders the future US role in the region in trade and economic growth. His slogan, first America, and withdrawing from a regional agreement is seen as distance from free trade.
The president also pledged to correct the lack of balance with China and Japan. The APEC summit together makes 21 economies on both sides of the Pacific, equivalent to 60 per cent of the world's 6 GDP. Following the coming to power, Trump withdrew the US from the Trans-peacemaker partnership, a major trade deal among the 12 APEC countries, with the claim that it would harm the interests of the American economy.
