The U.S. department has reacted to the proclamation of independence by Catalonia.
State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said Friday that Catalonia is an integral part of Spain and Washington supports Madrid's efforts to maintain the country's union.
“Catalonia is an integral part of Spain and the United States supports the Spanish government's constitutional measures to keep Spain strong and united,” said in a statement State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert.
