The military says it seized the last town, Altun Kupri, near Erbali, with the help of the Shiite paramilitaries Saturday after a three-hour battle, reports “Al Jazeera”, the Periscopi broadcast.
Kurdish fighters Pesmerga were sending reinforcements to fight the Iraqi army and militia to the front line north of Kirkuk, while Iraqi forces were trying to push the Pesmerga further towards the regional sacrificial capital, Erbil.
The fighting continued at Altun Kupri, about 40km northwest of Kirkuk, on the Erbil-Kirku Street.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi ordered the army not to enter the borders of Erbali's city, saying they would protect civilians and their property, respecting what he called the 2003 perimeters of the disputed area.
Kurds took new positions three days after withdrawing from Kirkuk following a dramatic push by the government, assisted by Hashad al-Shaabi and the Shia militants.
Kurdish leaders estimated that around 100,000 people left the area since the start of the operation.
Stefanie Dekker of “Alzeera”, reporting from Kirkuk, said a new front line opened early Friday after Iraqi forces and Hasd al-Shaabi moved to the Peshmerga places in Altun Curri.
Just a few miles behind the front line, we're seeing a huge presence of ambulances waiting for warriors damaged to be sent to Erbali hospitals. We have seen many injured”, Dekker said.
Speaking of Al Jazeera from Kirkuk, Nazm Harky, commander of the 10th Weightmaker Division, said: “actually, when we were at war with ISII, everyone praised Peshmerga, they are brave fighting for the world. ”)
When I see this situation today, everyone is turning their backs on”, the Kurdish commander said./Periscopi/
