New York's human rights lawyer said in a statement that Afghan children -- younger than 14 -- fought in the Fatemeyun division, Iran-backed armed group fighting alongside government forces in the Syrian conflict.
<x0Iran must immediately stop recruiting children and return the ability the children are in Syria”, said Sarah Leah Watson, director of Human Rights Watch in the Middle East.
HRW said a photo of the Iranian cemetery identified eight Afghan children who apparently died fighting in Syria.
Iranian media reports confirmed some of these cases and reported at least six cases of Afghan children who died fighting.
Under international law, recruiting children under the age of 15 to participate actively in combat is considered a war crime.
