The court in Palermo has confirmed that the former Italian footballer has asked his friend Mauro Lauricella (Kalsa mob boy) to raise 12,000 euros for him, money linked to the leadership of a discotheque.
Lauricella has used violent methods of making money, although only 2,000 euros had been recovered.
He and Gioacchino Amato have been charged with mafia-style extortion (crimes punishable by up to ten years in prison).
However, Amato has been released, and Lauricella has been convicted of lesser crime for private violence, serving a year of parole.
Miccoli has dismissed the charges against him, saying he did not know his friend's connection to the mafia.
The former footballer's lawyer has stressed that there was no extortion and that he will appeal the verdict.
“Miccoli is very angry and sad because he knows he's innocent”
“It has no connection with these accusations and we will try to prove it in the appeals process”, lawyer Giovanni Castroovo has told reporters.
