Driton Caushi is the candidate for the mayor of the Gjakova municipality, MP Sami Kurteshi is the candidate for mayor of the Gjilan municipality, MP Faton Topalli is the candidate for the mayor of Ferizaj municipality, MP Salih Salihu is the candidate for mayor of the Year's municipality, MP Mytaher Hasku is the candidate for mayor of Prizren's municipality, and MP Stayn Kastra is the candidate for the mayor of the Dardan municipality. In second place is the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), which, in the mayoral race, has three deputies, two of whom compete for mayoralty, while one is the host of the municipal assembly list.
MP The PDK, Agim Aliu, is the candidate for chairman of the Ferizaj municipality, while MP Zenun Pajaziti is the candidate for mayor of the Gjilan municipality, while MP Hajdar Beqa is the host of the list for the municipal assembly in Gjakova. Other parties have only one MP in the race for the October 22nd local elections. From the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK) alone, MP Arbani is the candidate for head of the Pristina municipality.
Likewise, the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK) in this election is represented only by an MP. Her MP, Ghani Dresaj, is the candidate for the chairman of The Source Committee. The Initiative for Kosovo also has an MP in the race for local government. Initiative MP Zafir Berisha is the candidate for mayor of Prizren. Part of the local race is Deputy Alternative Mimoza Kusari-Lila, who is running for re-elected head of the Gjakova municipality.
In addition to Albanian parties, part of the 22 October local elections are MPs from minority parties. Independent MP from the Bosniak community's ranks, Emilia Rexhepi, is a candidate for Prizren chairmanship. Several ministers and other government officials have also submitted to the race for local elections.
Health Minister Uran Ismaili is also the candidate for municipal assembly of the Democratic Party of Kosovo in Pristina. Culture, Youth and Sports Minister Kujtim Gashi is also the host of the PDK's list of municipal assembly in Prizren. Similarly, Minister of Education, Science and Technology Shyqi, Bytyqi, is the candidate for mayor of Pristina from the Kosovo Initiative ranks. Also, Trade and Industry Minister Bajram Hasani is candidate for the Kosovo Initiative for mayor of the Gjilan municipality.
Part of the October 22nd election race is Kosovo Government spokesman Arber Vllahiu, who is the mayor of Pristina from the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo.
Election and political processes analyst from the Kosovo Democratic Institute (KDI), Albert Krasniqi, has told the newspaper “The new age” that, in the absence of human resources, political subjects have been forced to run dozens of deputies for mayors.
“The candidacy of many Kosovo Assembly deputies for mayors comes from the lack of human resources that have political subjects. Hence, subjects try to compete with the same people at both levels, both for the Kosovo Assembly and for municipal municipalities and”, he has declared. Although the law does not prohibit that, Krasniqi has said MPs should not enter the race for local power.
According to him, the involvement of MPs in local elections is hampering the normal functioning of the Kosovo Assembly.
