Rubio: The U.S. is “harmonised” with Allies in the Persian Gulf in terms of Iran

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been aiming to ensure Persian Gulf allies that Washington will remain “fully harmonised with regional partners, as technical talks for the memorandum of Understanding between the US and Iran, signed last week and aimed at ending the conflict in the Middle East continue.
Speaking in Kuwait on June 24th during a tour of Gulf States, Rubio stressed that the United States “will not do anything affecting the safety of our allies” as negotiations develop.
His visit to the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Bahrain comes amid concerns from some governments of the Persian Gulf states that the proposed deal is too favourable to Tehran.
The memorandum, which is the first agreement of this kind signed by US and Iranian presidents since the Islamic Revolution of 1979, includes a proposed $300 billion fund for reconstruction of Iran after the war, as well as easing several sanctions.
Rubio said technical negotiators will resume talks later this month, likely in Switzerland, to determine the details of the implementation of the agreement.
“If Iran wants to reach a good and real agreement, the United States is open to this”, he said, warning however that President Donald Trump still has “opposions” if diplomacy fails.
The US and Israel launched attacks on Iran in late February. A fragile ceasefire agreement was reached in April.
President Trump has said he will not allow Iran to have nuclear weapons.
