In an interview with the prestigious media, the president has named the alliance a “player of paper”.
He has said that the US removal from the defence treaty is now “beyond reconsideration”.
It is the strongest sign so far that the White House no longer considers Europe a reliable partner, following Allies' refusal to send warships to reopen Hormuz Strait.
