Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI)'s latest study shows that Germany has surpassed China, positioning as the world's fourth largest arms exporter.
According to SIPRI, between 2021 and 2025, Berlin was responsible for 5.7 percent of the global weapons distribution, slightly more than China by 5.6 percent. In the global rankings, the United States remains the undisputed leader with 42 percent of arms exports, followed by France by 9.8 percent and Russia at 6.8 percent.
Experts link the rise in German exports to European states' efforts to strengthen the production of defence equipment after Ukraine's full invasion of Russia in 2022. Another important phenomenon is identified in the report: Ukraine became the world's leading importer of weapons in the same period of time, with 9.7 percent of global imports clearly reflecting the impact of Ukrainian conflict on the international arms market.
Top German arms and military equipment buyers have been Ukraine, Egypt, and Israel, which contributed to a 15 percent increase in foreign sales compared to 2016-2020. SIPRI underlined that about a quarter of German exports, or 24 percent, went to Ukraine as military aid. Germany's military trade portfolio includes armoured vehicles, artillery ammunition and air protection systems.
Most popular products, such as Leopard 2, KF41 Lynx, Boxer and air protection system I RIS-T SLM is widely used by European military forces, enriching the continent's defence capacity.
