Ukraine's prime minister resigns after Zelensky's decision to fire him, and who are the potential candidates?

The news was announced Monday, 13 July, by Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk, who said the issue would be considered in line with the specified procedure.

“Parliament will consider this issue in the near future, according to the usual” procedure, wrote Stefancuk on the social platform “X”.

Parliamentary procedure for forming a new government is expected to begin Tuesday.

Ukrainian MPs have reported on social networks some of the names being circulated as potential candidates to replace Sviridenko. Among them are Sergei Koretsky, head of the state oil and gas company “Naftogaz”, Energy Minister Denis Schmyhal, who earlier served as defence minister for six months, and current Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

Ukrainian MPs are expected to vote this week for the establishment of the new government, following Zelensky's decision to oust his prime minister.

Ukrainian President has justified this movement with the need for new “ ” and a new approach in running the country.

Critics, however, have warned that changes in government could cause uncertainty and tension in a delicate period for Ukraine, while the country continues its fight with Russia. /Panorama
