Officials said the reinforcements would come from a ship-ready group and the Marine Exploration Unit, with an official adding that the group would be led by Japan-based USS Tripoli attack ship.
The USS Tripoli-led unit usually consists of about 5,000 sailors and marines scattered on several warships.
The development comes as President Donald Trump said US forces had “completely destroyed” Iranian military infrastructure on Kharg Island in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical water route for global oil transport.
Iranian revenge attacks targeting Israel and US military bases across the Middle East have cut off key joints of international air travel and caused the rise in oil prices.
Asked when the American Navy would start escorting tanks through the Strait of Hormuz, Trump told reporters Friday: “will soon happen”, Telegrafi reports, broadcast Periscope.
It is also reported that the application for reinforcements was made by the US Central Command, the part of the US Army responsible for the Middle East, and was approved by Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.
The US is also moving parts of a missile defence system installed in South Korea to the Middle East, according to officials quoted by the Washington Post.
Trump earlier said Iran would be hit heavily “” over the next week, adding that the Iran war would end “when I feel”. /Periscope
