The United States increased pressure on Iran this week, setting a month-long deadline for an agreement and announcing the sending of a second aircraft carrier to the Persian Gulf.
Iran and the US held indirect talks in Oman on 6 February and announced a new round of talks next week in Geneva. Oman will again act as mediator.
Trump said this week that he believes Iran wants an agreement and voiced hope that negotiations will end “within a month”. Otherwise, he threatened the most traumatic “”.
The talks in Oman were the first since the US and Israel attacked Iran in June last year and were held after Trump decided in January that he would not attack Tehran, as he seriously examined military actions due to the brutal crackdown on mass protests in the country.
