A US State Department official indicated that, following a continuing assessment of the security situation in the region, the US Department of State was considered to be a reasonable “ ” reduction of US Embassy staff, leaving only absolutely needed personnel in office.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity since the decision was not officially announced, stressed that the move is temporary and that the embassy continues to function normally.
Last week, Iran held annual military exercises together with Russia, as a second American carrier approached the Middle East. Both the US and Iran have claimed they are ready for war if Tehran's nuclear programme talks fail.
US President Donald Trump said Thursday he believes 10 to 15 days is enough to reach an agreement with Iran. However, negotiations have remained deadlocked for years, while Iran has refused to discuss broader US and Israeli demands for limiting its missile programme and cutting ties with armed organisations.
The indirect talks held in recent weeks have marked little apparent progress, while there is a possibility that one or both sides will be gaining time for final military preparations.
A second State Department official, also under condition of anonymity, announced that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio could postpone his planned visit to Israel this weekend.
