Tensions with Iran, U.S. hosts fighter planes in Portugal

The images came after US President Donald Trump signaled a possible limited attack on Iran to pressure him to reach an agreement on his nuclear programme.

According to local media reports, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebello Soussa acknowledged that the Portuguese government is monitoring “from close and full knowledge of the facts” the use of the Lajes Air Base in Terceira, Azore, from the United States.

“Minister of State and Foreign Affairs Paulo Rangel informed me a week ago of the possibility that the Laje Air Base could be used under the terms of the existing agreement between Portugal and the United States of America”, he said, Telegraph, broadcast Periscope.

Airbase saw 11 fuel supply tanks KC-46A Pegasus, 12 F-16 Viper fighter planes and a tactical jet C-17 Globester III capable of fast delivery throughout the world of troops and cargo.

Military analysts drew parallels to Operation “Midnight Hammer” of the US Army, during which Laish served as the fuel supply critical centre for secret B-2 Spir bombers conducting air strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities last June.

Trump has deployed warships, warplanes and other military equipment in the Middle East.
