US Secretary of State Marko Rubio has congratulated Serbia's citizens on the issue of citizenship day and has expressed expectations that the two states continue to deepen co-operation.

In a statement published on the State Department's page on February 15th, Rubio stressed that the two states share a long and important history, described by mutual friendship and respect”.

The United States is committed to building on these strong ties as we work together to expand trade and investment and strengthen economic prosperity for our two countries. We value partnership with Serbia in promoting stability and prosperity throughout the Western Balkans and look forward to deepening our co-operation in the upcoming year”, Secretary Rubio's statement said.

American top diplomat Marco Rubio, and Serbian President Aleksandar Vuciq held a conversation in the theatre at the Economic Forum in Davos in January. After that meeting, Vuciq said that “two formal conditions have been introduced before Serbia for launching Strategic Dialogue with the US.

One of these conditions, according to him, is about energy, and the other is political in nature.

Since then, neither Belgrade nor Washington have been promoted on these conditions.

Strategic dialogue, which the US develops with dozens of countries in the world in order to deepen co-operation, includes a wide range of areas, starting with economy, security and foreign policy.

The reduction of energy dependence on the Western Balkans from Russia is included among the objectives of the US National Protection Authority Act, adopted in mid-December last year.

The same act also mentions reducing Chinese influence in the region.

Immediate progress in dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo is also defined as one of the goals of the Act for National Defence Authorisation, which US President Donald Trump signed on December 19th.

Under this act, the US supports reaching a final agreement between Kosovo and Serbia based on mutual recognition.

In August 2025 it was announced that it would launch Strategic Dialogue between Serbia and the US, but so far this process has not begun. / REL
