From “CNN Clears Details From “El Menchon”

After years of his persecution, Mexican forces received concrete information on February 20th about the whereabouts of Cartel's formidable leader Jalisco Nueva Generation.

Their investigation into the Orguera network had led them to a key person who could help enter his home, a trusted “man of one of his girlfriends, according to Mexican Defence Secretary Ricardo Trevillea Trejo.

The next day, her girlfriend left the Ogueira cabin complex on the outskirts of Tapala, but the drug boss remained at home with his security team.

To avoid raising doubts, the mission was carried out mainly by ground forces with limited air support from helicopters.

According to CNN's analysis of social networking videos, some Mexican army units were present in the centre of Tapala on Sunday morning.

President Claudia Shanebaum said the US shared intelligence information that helped the operation, but did not send ground forces.

How the Attack Was Attacked

Mexican troops placed a perimeter around the compound and then approached. As they did so, they were shot by the deputy orguera.

Using video footage of witnesses caught during the operation, CNN identified El Mencho's possible location in a forest area that houses several small ported complexes, just over three miles southwest of Tapala. The site, a rented holiday facility known as Cabañas La Loma, is located near Tapppa County Club at the end of a long and isolated route.

Cabañas La Loma was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department in 2015 and again in 2017 for offering “material aid for the (Jalisco)” drug trafficking activities.

CNN's verified images show uniformed men and armoured vehicles advancing a slope toward Cabañas La Loma.

Witness images, initially geolocated by online researcher Halipon and verified by CNN, show dozens of people in uniform and armoured vehicles climbing into the country.

At other glance, filmed below on the entrance route, automatic shots are heard, while a third video recorded simultaneously shows dense black smoke rising from the area.

During the shootout, eight cartel members were killed and two soldiers wounded.

Orguera and some of his deputies later fled to a nearby forest area, leaving behind a group “with a large quantity of weapons” that continued to fight.

While some of the Mexican troops remained to confront the group in the cabin, a Special Forces team broke down in pursuit of Oguera, which they found hidden in an area of dense forest vegetation.

After another gunfight, the Special Forces team arrested the cartel leader and his two bodyguards. All three were severely injured and were determined to be evacuated for survival.

Along with a wounded soldier, the three cartel members were placed in a helicopter that was supposed to take them to a hospital in the nearby town of Guadaira.

However, when the three died on flight, the authorities decided to change their destination, fearing a violent reaction in Guadaira, where the cartel had great influence. The helicopter moved to Morelia International Airport, where an Air Force aircraft was waiting to be taken to Mexico City.

News of Oguera's death plunged much of Mexico into chaos as the cartel's forces undertook a wave of revengeful violence.

The gangs set up fiery barricades on the road and engaged in clashes with the military.

The airlines suspended flights to the region and the US called on its citizens to take refuge in the country during the riots.

Among the chaos, 25 effective National Guard military police were killed.

The operation took place at a time of great importance to Mexico. With Trump threatening cross-border intervention, Shanebaum no doubt wanted to show that he was forcibly hitting drug gangs.

However, it also represents an estimated danger, given the World Cup's proximity to the violence sparked by the drug boss's death. Guadalcanal will host matches this summer, at an event expected to bring economic benefits to Jaliscon, and Sheinbaum would undoubtedly be careful not to intimidate tourists.

It is possible that the possibility of apprehending orguera that the U.S. has classified as a global terrorist with a special relationship and a $15 million reward was not lost.
