What chance does Kosovo have to enter NATO? Albanian Ambassador Speaks

In a conversation to “Euronews Albania”, he said that, despite the determining role the US has for decision-making within the Atlantic Alliance, four countries that are part of NATO have not recognised Kosovo's citizenship and, according to him, based on this analysis, Kosovo will have difficulty with NATO membership.

“Kosovo will not soon be a NATO member, because despite the determining role the US has for decision-making within the Atlantic Alliance, all decisions are made by consensus, but not to forget, some countries that are NATO members have not recognised Kosovo as a state”.

“I find it impossible for countries that have not recognised Kosovo's citizenship to vote for Kosovo on NATO membership, because the states enter NATO, if you do not recognise it as a state, you cannot, but that does not prevent co-operation”, the Albanian ambassador said.

But, he says Kosovo is anchored and will remain ultimately anchored with NATO.

Turdiu, however, agrees that the fact that there is a powerful NATO base in Kosovo, such as Bondsteel, is not enough reason for normal membership.

He added that the US has a powerful basis even in Qatar, where strategic bombers do, but Qatar will never become a NATO member.

Turdiu further said Kosovo is not in danger of an attack by Serbia, being NATO member states there.

“I believe that Kosovo is not threatened by an outside attack from Serbia, that the next skee is endangered because there are NATO troops, there is a defence similar to all of the defence of all other countries that are formal NATO members”, the Albanian ambassador said.

He even said that Kosovo is militarily protected, and that “currently speak calmly”.

Albania's diplomat stresses that Kosovo will have to continue to maintain strong ties with the West, develop them and take care of them, as well as increase its defence capacities.

The ambassador thinks that even at the time when Kosovo becomes fully eligible part of NATO, it is not that the military capacity of Kosovo will play a key role, as well as Albania's capacity.

“Albania contributes to NATO by 0.07% of capacity, makes no difference, but has a vote like other countries have. The political aspect is very powerful and confirming Kosovo's political will to become NATO members is essential in this process”, the ambassador said. /Periscope/
