A German Navy frigate has left for the Red Sea, where Berlin plans to participate in an EU mission to help protect cargo ships from Iran-backed Yemen rebels' attacks.
Hessen left the port of the North Sea of Wilhelmshaven with about 240 people on board, reports the Associated Press.
EU foreign ministers are expected to sign the Red Sea mission on 19 February. Officials have said seven countries in the bloc are ready to offer ships or planes.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has said the EU mission, unlike US and Great Britain forces in the region, will carry out no military attacks.
Meanwhile, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is heading to Washington and will meet with US President Joe Biden on Friday. In addition to discussing the war in Ukraine, it also aims to discuss plans to strengthen NATO's Western defence alliance and the Israeli-Hamas war, German government officials said, Report Express broadcast.
Reuters reports that speaking at Berlin Airport prior to its departure, Scholz said Germany felt the responsibility to stand by Israel's side while developing the necessary conditions for a lasting peace in the region as a solution of two states and humanitarian aid to Gaza.
