Charged for war crimes and crimes against humanity, former Kosovo President Hashim Thaci and his three wartime associates will appear on April 3rd before the special court in The Hague.
The charges charged include murder, torture and violent shift, and related to the 1998/99 war in Kosovo. Former Kosovo Liberation Army leaders Thaci, Kadri Veselini, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi have been declared innocent.
Special Court spokesman at The Hague Michael Doyle has spoken about the trial process.
The trial will begin with statements by prosecutors that have collected evidence.
After the special prosecutor makes the opening statement, the victim's lawyer has been assigned a maximum of 45 minutes to speak on behalf of the victims in this case. There are 140 victims participating, represented through this lawyer”, says Doyle for the REL.
Hundreds of witnesses are expected to attend the trial.
The procedure has said it intends to rely on the evidence of 312 witnesses, even though this number can change with the development of the” procedures, Doyle explains.
How long can the entire trial process last?
This is very difficult to predict because, of course, it will depend on how the procedures will be conducted. So really, all we know right now is the prosecution's calculation, about two years for presenting their case”, has declared Doyle.
