Former President Hashim Thaci's defence has issued four statements, made in 1999, where he called for tensions between Serbs and Albanians to drop, and spoke of a multiethnic Kosovo.
Here are the following statements:
June 1999: These days we have had a poor, not responsible phenomenon by individuals or certain groups, which have been dealt with with incisions of houses, misuse of KLA symbols, breaking up Serb monuments and busts. It is a phenomenon that has stumbled and disturbed us. We are influenced by such irresponsible actions.
July 1999: Your city has always known to separate good, evil, what does not match our future. Today, not to think of revenge, hatred, and division, is a time of unity, and we should each play this role, indiscriminately, political definition, ideology, province, religion or other definition. We don't need ethnic cities, we need to respect all those who don't think about confrontation, we'll respect all those who deserve respect. We will not allow anarchy in the city, no spirit of intolerance in Kosovo.
July 1999: Thaci visits Serb areas, he again sought to call on him to face the killings that occurred and urged Serbs to return to Kosovo.
It's an act against democracy. I invite Serbs in Kosovo not to leave Kosovo, not to be afraid of Albanians. Draw close to each other as equal citizens of Kosovo.
September 2, 1999: The Thaci meeting, Robin Cook in London, leaving a number of Serbs has been disturbing to us. We are interested in building an equal society for all in Kosovo. We have invited you and we expect those people to return to Kosovo, help peace and democracy./Periscopi/
