Prime Minister Edi Rama has recently provided an interview for the Italian show “Porta a Porta”, where he has been asked about the possibility of Serbia's EU accession.
The head of the government has indicated that it is good for the Western Balkans to be united and in terms of Serbia's approach to Russia, he said Serbia has not sanctioned Russia for clear reasons that at some point it should be understood that they are the reasons for political and historical nature, but also the pragmatic nature.
Vitoriana Abate: Do Albania fear a possible European Union expansion involving Serbia, at a time when we see Serbia very close to Russia?
Edi Rama: No, not only do we not fear that, but we are a strong enough voice in the Western Balkans that says we have to keep Serbia very close and we have to do everything we can to be politically united. On the other hand, there are certainly differences because Serbia has not sanctioned Russia for clear reasons that at some point it should be understood that they are the reasons of political and historical nature, but also of pragmatic nature.
Vitoriana Abate: What is the impact of the war in Ukraine in the Balkans and in Albania in particular?
Edi Rama: We have to do everything to avoid combat passion, say, not include us in creating disputes between NATO member states and pro-NATO in the Balkans, and between Serbia and communities belonging to a Slavic-orthodox world, which is closely linked to Russia.
Vitoriana Abate: Can a European Union, which includes Albania and other Balkan countries without Serbia, be thought to be?
Edi Rama: No, not in my opinion.
Vitoriana Abate: What scenario can you imagine at this stage of conflict?
Edi Rama: The greatest possibility is that this is one of the so-called frozen conflicts, but with a very impressive dimension that can take revenge not only Russia and Ukraine, but the whole world over a long period of time. And if the Russians have always been fierce warriors, the Ukrainians are the same. So to say that you can move here without them, I find it very difficult.
